FRANGIPANI
Frangipani is a new dance production inspired by the Araliya flower, commonly called the Plumeria by many English speakers. This flower is associated with the temple in both Hindu and Buddhist culture. In Sri Lanka also it is associated with cemeteries and the president’s house. The flower is used as a symbol of different political organizations all around the world. When talking about the frangipani, people tend to think of it as a simple flower. However the frangipani evokes an intermingling of feelings. This production will use body language to personify the frangipani flower in its strong, weak and mild manifestations. The performance intends to deepen the audience’s understanding of nature and enrich their appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the environment.
The production, premiered on 22nd and 23rd of April 2009 at Lionel Wendt Theatre, was performed again on 10th of August, 2009, at John de Silva Memorial Theatre, Colombo.
